What if Imam Forgets He Has No Ablution

Discovering that your wudu' (ablution) was invalid after leading a congregational prayer can cause confusion and concern. This article addresses a common question posed to Islamic scholars regarding the validity of the prayer for both the imam (leader) and the ma'mum (followers) in such a situation. We present the answer provided by Shaykh 'Abdullah Al-Faqih, Mufti at the Islamic Network (Shabakah Islamiyah) in Qatar, outlining the necessary steps for the imam and clarifying the status of the follower's prayer, all based on authentic Islamic jurisprudence.

[ss_social_follow] Question:

Assalamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

I had led a friend in the Dhuhr prayer (noon prayer), but after some time passed, I confirmed that my wudu' (ablution) was invalid, meaning I prayed without wudu'. I got up and repeated the prayer at home, but I did not inform my friend. What should I do? Should I inform him so he can repeat the prayer, even after two days, or what should I do? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:

All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his Companions. To proceed:

What you did by making up the prayer that you performed without wudu' is what must be done;

because your first prayer was not valid due to the absence of taharah (purification) from ritual impurity, which is a condition for the validity of the prayer;

due to the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him:

Allah does not accept any prayer without tuhur (purification), (Sahih Muslim: 224)

Al-Imam Al-Nawawi said:

The Ummah (Muslim community) has agreed by ijma' (consensus) that whoever prays while in a state of ritual impurity (muhidth), when able to perform wudu', their prayer is void and repeating it is mandatory by consensus, whether they did so deliberately, out of forgetfulness, or out of ignorance. End quote.

As for your friend who followed you (i'tam) in the prayer, his prayer is sahih (valid), and you are not obliged to inform him of this.

For a more detailed ruling on this matter, see Fatwa number: 27368.

And Allah knows best.

Conclusion

This fatwa clearly establishes that the imam's prayer is invalid and must be repeated because purification is a fundamental condition for the validity of salah. The hadith, "Allah does not accept any prayer without tuhur (purification)," confirms this requirement, regardless of whether the impurity was known, forgotten, or unknown at the time of the prayer.

Crucially, however, the ma'mum's (follower's) prayer remains valid and they are not required to repeat it. This ruling, based on the established view of many scholars, relieves the burden on the congregation, as they performed their part of the obligation while being unaware of the imam's invalid state. The imam, therefore, does not have to inform the follower.
