HADITH TEXT
Imam Abu Dawud narrated with a sound chain, according to Al-Albani, from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:رَحِمَ اللَّهُ رَجُلًا قَامَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَصَلَّى وَأَيْقَظَ امْرَأَتَهُ فَإِنْ أَبَتْ نَضَحَ فِي وَجْهِهَا الْمَاءَ، وَرَحِمَ اللَّهُ امْرَأَةً قَامَتْ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَصَلَّتْ وَأَيْقَظَتْ زَوْجَهَا، فَإِنْ أَبَى نَضَحَتْ فِي وَجْهِهِ الْمَاءَ.
May Allah have mercy on a man who gets up at night and prays, and wakes up his wife. If she refuses, he sprinkles water on her face. And may Allah have mercy on a woman who gets up at night and prays, and wakes up her husband. If he refuses, she sprinkles water on his face, (Sunan Abu Dawud: 1308).EXPLANATION OF THE HADITH
The Prophet's saying, "May Allah have mercy on a man," is a statement that he deserves mercy and the fulfillment of his prayers, or it is a prayer and praise for the good deed he has done. The Prophet's saying, "If she refuses," means she refrains from getting up because she is overcome by sleep and laziness.
The Prophet's saying, "He sprinkles water on her face," means he sprinkles it to remove the drowsiness from his wife. The purpose is to be gentle with her and to encourage her to get up and obey her Lord as much as possible. It is said that the face was specifically chosen to be sprinkled with water because it is the most noble and honorable part of the body, and by sprinkling it, drowsiness and sleep are most likely to disappear faster than from other body parts. The face is also the first body part that is obligatory to wash.LESSONS FROM THE HADITH
