Justin Trudeau Expected to Step Down soon - Reuters Souces

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is anticipated to announce his resignation as the leader of the Liberal Party as soon as Monday, according to a source who spoke to Reuters on Sunday.

This source requested to remain anonymous because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

The Globe and Mail newspaper reported on Sunday that Trudeau is preparing to resign.

The newspaper cited three anonymous sources who said the exact timing of the announcement is still uncertain.

However, it is expected to come before a key National Caucus meeting on Wednesday.

It is yet to be decided whether Trudeau will step down immediately or continue as prime minister until a new leader is selected.

According to one source, Trudeau has talked to Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc about becoming the interim leader and prime minister.

However, this plan might face complications if LeBlanc decides to run for the position himself.

Trudeau's office did not respond to a request for comment outside of regular business hours.

This news comes at a time when polls indicate that the Liberal Party is likely to lose to the Conservative Party in the upcoming election, which must be held by October.

In two weeks, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is set to take office, and he has promised trade policies that could negatively affect Canada's economy.

Trudeau's resignation might prompt calls for a quick election to ensure Canada has strong leadership to deal with the challenges of a Trump administration over the next four years. Reuters
