TEXT OF AN-NAWAWI’S FORTY HADITH 40
This world is a means and a field for the Hereafter.
From Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) held my shoulder and said, “Be in this world as if you are a stranger[1] or a traveler passing through.”[2]وَكَانَ ٱبْنُ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ: إِذَا أَمْسَيْتَ، فَلَا تَنْتَظِرِ ٱلصَّبَاحَ، وَإِذَا أَصْبَحْتَ، فَلَا تَنْتَظِرِ ٱلْمَسَاءَ، وَخُذْ مِنْ صِحَّتِكَ لِمَرَضِكَ، وَمِنْ حَيَاتِكَ لِمَوْتِكَ
And Ibn Umar used to say, “When evening comes, do not expect to reach the morning[3]; and when morning comes, do not expect to reach the evening.[4] Take from your health before your sickness[5], and from your life before your death,”[6] (Sahih Bukhari: 6416).EXPLANATION
Ibn Daqiq al-Eid, may Allah have mercy on him, said:هٰذَا تَنْبِيهٌ عَلَى ٱغْتِنَامِ أَيَّامِ ٱلْحَيَاةِ، لِأَنَّ مَنْ مَاتَ ٱنْقَطَعَ عَمَلُهُ، وَفَاتَ أَمَلُهُ، وَعَاتَبَ حَسْرَةً عَلَىٰ تَفْرِيطِهِ، وَنَدَمَهُ،
This is a reminder to use the days of our life well. Because when someone dies, their good deeds stop, and what they hoped for is gone. They feel very sad and regretful for not doing enough good things.
They know that a long time will come when they will be under the ground, and they won't be able to do any good deeds or even remember Allah very much. So, we should do good things while we are healthy and have time.LESSONS FROM AN-NAWAWI’S FORTY HADITH 40
1 – It 's okay to start by giving advice and showing the right way, even if someone didn't ask for it.
2 – We should try not to love worldly things too much.
3 – Everyone in this world is like a guest. And what they have is borrowed. The guest will leave, and what was borrowed will be given back.

6 - We should use our good health well, because we might get sick and not be able to do things anymore.
7 - A believer looks at this world like it's just a path to the next life.

Sheikh Khalid Al-Juhani said regarding this Hadith 40:
When someone is far from home, there are some important things for them:
1 – They don't stay forever in the place they are just passing through. It's the same for a believer; they don't stay forever in this world.
2 – They are happy with just a few things. It's the same for a believer; they are happy with just a few things in this world.
3 – They don't try to compete with the people of that place for their worldly things, because they are thinking about the journey ahead. It's the same for a believer; they don't compete with others for worldly things, but they think about the next life and getting ready for what's coming.
4 – They are ready to travel at any time. It's the same for a believer; they are ready to meet their Lord whenever Allah wants.
5 – A guest doesn't get too sad if they miss out on things in that place, because those things are not really theirs. It's the same for a believer; they don't get so sad about missing out on worldly things that it stops them from doing good deeds for the next life.
6 – A guest doesn't feel completely comfortable until their time away from home ends and they reach where they want to be. It's the same for a believer; they won't feel completely comfortable until Allah, in His kindness, takes them to the place of honor (Paradise).
7 – A guest uses their time in that place to help them finish their journey. They get water, food, and rest there so they can keep going.
It's the same for a believer; they use this world to help them on their journey to the next life. They do good deeds to help them along the way.VOCABULARY
[1] Stranger means:
He does not find someone to feel comfortable with.
This means someone walking on a road, looking for his home. This is higher than being a stranger, because a stranger might feel okay living in a new place, but a traveler does not feel like that.
[3] Do not expect to reach the morning means:
This means don’t delay your night work until the morning.
[4] Do not expect to reach the evening means:
Don't delay the morning work until the evening; because morning and evening each have their own special work.
[5] Take from your health before your sickness means:
It means, use your time when you are healthy to do good things. Because maybe you will get sick and won't be able to do them anymore.
[6] From your life before your death means:
It means, do good things while you are alive that will help you even after you die.
