Apple has firmly denied allegations that it sold data collected by its Siri voice assistant or used it to create marketing profiles.
The company's statement, released on Wednesday (1/8/2025), came just days after the technology giant settled a class action lawsuit regarding its virtual assistant, Siri.
The plaintiffs in the lawsuit accused Apple of routinely recording their private conversations and disclosing the content to third parties, including advertisers.
They claimed that these recordings occurred inadvertently when the voice assistant was activated by phrases similar to the "Hey Siri" command.
In response, Apple agreed to a $95 million settlement, a decision that many social media users interpreted as an admission of guilt.
However, Apple has consistently denied any wrongdoing. In its latest statement, the iPhone maker reiterated that it had never sold Siri data to anyone for any purpose.
Apple clarified that it never retained audio recordings unless users had explicitly opted in to allow such data collection.
The company emphasized its commitment to user privacy, stating, "I respect your privacy and only listen when you're talking to me."
Even then, Apple assured that the recordings were solely used to improve Siri's performance.
This class action lawsuit is not an isolated incident.
A similar legal battle involving Google's voice assistant is currently underway in California, with the same team of lawyers representing the plaintiffs as in the Apple case. Reuters
